A Visit From Agatha Christie

On a quiet summer morning in 2023, I awoke with the name ‘Agatha Christie’ very prominently in my mind. I thought how odd - the name sounds familiar but who is Agatha? A quick google search told me ah but of course! A notoriously famous mystery novelist - And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express to name a few. But I wondered, what does Agatha Christie have to do with me? I dug deeper.

Agatha lived a full life. A gifted child turned famous novelist turned Dame. Needless to say, Agatha was a badass. What struck me most about her story was her relationship with husband Max Mallowan. Max was a British archaeologist that studied the ancient Near East. Agatha traveled with Max to excavation sites. Her travels to these ancient sites inspired many of her most famous books.

Since Agatha’s visit in my semi-dream conscious state, my paintings have become an excavation site in themselves. I became an archaeologist. The canvas became crumbling stone and the paintbrush a tool to reveal what’s hidden.
