Transcendental Art & Meditation
The book The Other Side by Jennifer Higgie continues to be a guiding force in my research of understanding the interplay of spiritualism and the arts. The book reminded me of an art movement brought on by the Transcendental Painting Group founded in 1938. This group of artists translated their heightened awareness of the non-physical world through painting (aka) a group of people I absolutely would be besties with. And so, I reflected on what my personal practices in staying open and connected to the non-physical aspect of this work is currently and how I can go deeper. Meditation is a key component. With that said, I’ve not tried transcendental meditation (TM). The only real difference being that TM is repeating a mantra over and over again while in a meditative state. I’m inspired to log and observe my own personal TM practice and respond with painting. Pictured above are two textile paintings inspired by these themes and in thinking about how repetition has the potential to unlock something.
